Ancestors of the Autsema-family

(Last update: March 2020)

Searching for members of our family I used the Internet. It struck me that there was so little information about the AUTSEMA-family. It was part of my decision to publish part of our family-history on the Internet. It was hardly possible to contact everyone with ties to our family personally to ask if they had any problem with this. Due to privacy legislation in the Netherland I have removed the members of our family born in the 20th century and later. People with close ties to our family are able to consult me personally about more information, but it is not published on the Internet. The largest part of the information I gathered was on location in Groningen (in the state archives), but I also used the Internet. My most important source on the Internet was Genlias, a Website of the State archives, but I also used information from other International genealogical sites and mormon-sites. In most cases I used one source and searched for confirmation in other sources, but sometimes the sources do not use the same facts.

When I use capitals it means that this is the lastname. There were some words and sentences that I could not translate accurate in English. I apologize for this. I have tried to correct all the data mentioned but it is possible that I forgot a few. In these cases please read: We use the German format in the Netherlands which means that we use dd-mm-yy, that means: day-month-years instead of the English/American format (mm-dd-yy). I have tried to create these documents without errors. Nevertheless if they occur, these errors are my responsability. Please feel free to report them to me.

For Generations and generations...

(this part of the site gives an overview of the ancestors of the Autsema-family.)

I Tjark Jans, born 1580. Married in 1608 with Aechtie (??). Lived around 1608 in a cloisterfarm in St. Annen.

This is the oldest generation I found out till now. This information (generation I till III) has to be read as probable and not as hard information. The sources for this information are the publications from Sipke Ausma and Henk van der Wijk ("De Groninger geslachten AUSMA and AUSEMA") and I have not been able to validate this information myself by using other sources.

For many centuries in the Netherlands children were named after their father, mother and/or grandfather and grandmother and people did not have a 'real' lastname that was lasting through generations. The lastname changed in the next generation. In many cased people used the names of their father as a lastname. So 'Tjarks' means in this context 'son/daughter of Tjark' and 'Jans' means 'son/daughter of Jan'. The next generation would use a 'lastname' that was the firstname of their father. It was also a habit these days that sons continued the work of their fathers. When their father was a farmer they would also become a farmer, so especially sons inherited the occupation of the father.

II Jan Tjarks, born 1610, baptized Februari 3 1678 as "bejaerde persoon op de belijdenisse syns geloofs" (this means something like "aged, in his confession of faith"). This means that he was baptized much later than he was born. He probably had a brother named Julle Tjarks.

III Tjark Jans, born 1640 marries in 1665 to Elske Jans.

IV

(Till this generation I have validated the information with marriage- and birthbooks in the State Archives of Groningen.)

This is the oldest generation of our family that I discovered myself. Searching for people before this time is hard labour, because there was no such thing as Civil Registration. The most important sources before this time (before 1800) are church records, but they are far from complete. In many cases they only use forenames. So you can read "John, son of John", but without any additional information like date of birth, birthplace, etc.. Research from this point is very difficult and takes a lot of time.

The marriagebook from Warffum reports that on Februari 3 1678 a man called Jan Tiarks is born. His father is unknown, his mother also (this means unreadable in the book), but it is stated that this peroon was an elder one. According to an employee of the State Archive this means that he must have been at least 18 years old, but possibly much older, and he was baptized when he was aware enough to chose this himself. In the Netherlands this is called "Doopsgezind" (Mennonite) .

The marriage and weddingbook also states that on April 9 1699 Jannes Tiarx from Onderendam and Meitje Jans (his housewife) have come to Warffum. It does not say where they came from.

They married on August 2 1696 (or September 13 1696).

Jannes (Jans?) Tjarks (Tiarks)

Beroep: Butcher (noted in the marriagebook Warffum)

Married on August 2 1696 (or September 13 1696) to

Meitse (Meitje, Meijke or Meijle) Jans, born March 5 1675. (sister of Eppe JANS and Teetje JANS)

She is called Meitse in the index of the marriage- and birthrecords.

Children:

(A double questionmark indicates that these data ar insecure)

1. Tiark, born Januari 31 1697 in Warffum

Father: Jannes Tiarks and Meitje Jans (DTB Warffum)

2. ??Jan, born May 7 1699 in Warffum

Father: Jannes Jans and his mother is Meitse Jans

On basis of chronology and relationship between names (especially the mother) I assume this child to be from the same parents.

3. Jantjen, baptized April 22 1798 in Warffum   Source: Sipke Ausma en Henk van der Wijk.
4. Jantjen, baptized April 29 1701 in Warffum   Source: Sipke Ausma en Henk van der Wijk.

3. Elske, born March 4 1703 in Warffum

Father: Jannes Tiarks en mother: Meitje Jans

6. Eppe, baptized October 7 1708 in Warffum   Source: Sipke Ausma en Henk van der Wijk.

4. Jantjen, born March 22 1711 in Warffum

Father: Jannes Tjarks, occupation: butcher and mother Meijke Jans

5. Jan, born January 28 1714 in Warffum

Father: Jannes Tjarks, occupation: butcher and mother is Meijke Jans

6. Bieuwke(?), born April 18 1717 in Warffum

Father: Jan Tjarks, occupation: butcher and mother is Meijle Jans

Biuwke?? (according to the birthbook Warffum)

As can be seen there is absolute confusion about how to write the mothers firstname. Is it Meitse, Meitje, Meijke or Meijle?? I am still not sure about this, but I think it was Meitse. Text in italic means that these are probably children of these parents, but I have not been able to validate these data myself.

V

Tjark JANNES, born May 2 1706 or January 31 1697.

Occupation: Butcher

Married May 7 1730 to

KLASEN (Clasen), Anje, born April 7 1709. (daughter of Claas Jans and Stijnje Jans)

Children:

1. Jannes, born March 3 1731 in Warffum

I will follow this person in this genealogy. I do not have much information about the other children of these parents.

2. Claas, born August 3 1732 in Warffum

3. Jan, born January 17 1734 in Warffum

4. Jan, baptized February 27 1735 in Warffum Source: Sipke Ausma en Henk van der Wijk.

4. Meijle (of Meijse), born July 28 1737 in Warffum

5. Kornelis, born May 3 1739 in Warffum

6. Meijl (or Meijse), born February 17 1743 in Warffum

7. Stijnje, born November 9 1747 in Warffum

VI

As stated before is is difficult to find more information about people before this time. There was no Civil Registry and in churchrecord they - in many cases - only used the firstname. The use of lastnames for 'ordinairy people was not usual. They would only refer to "Jan, son of Jan" without any factual information like date of birtch, place of birth, etc. This was also the case in our family. The father of the one family for instance was named "Jan Tjarks" and the first son of this father was called "Tjark Jans". The children of "Tjark Jans" in the next generation would have 'Tjarks' as the lastname. So, the lastname varies between generations. As long as the 'lastname' of the generation is "Tjarks" it was not so hard to find more information, although this name was written in about ten different varieties. But when the 'lastname' of the generation is "Jannes" it is almost impossible. There was a great number of people with this 'lastname'. Around 1811, when Napoleon occupied the Netherlands people were abliged to use a 'real' lastname that would also last in all the next generations. This is the first generation where a 'real' lastname is used.

AUSEMA, Jannes Tjarks (or Tjarkes), born. - - 1731 in Warffum (March 3 1731 according to Birthbook Warffum), died July 15 1799 in Uithuizen

1. ..., Tjark, born November 25 1755 in Warffum (Source: DTB Warffum, NGV)

This is the only child that is mentioned in the Birthrecords of Warffum. Apparently the family moved to Uithuizen.

Remarks: According to earlier research into the family Ausma and Ausema this Tjark did not excist, but it was mistakenly recorded by the Civil Registry in Warffum. Kornel(l)is Jannes (the second son in this list was mistakenly registered as Tjark in the Civil Records of Warffum.

2. Ausema, Kornel(l)is Jannes, born 1756 in Uithuizen (widower of Anje JANS), occupation: Landman, marries a second time at the age of 64.

These lastnames vary in the Civil Registry. There was no uniform spelling in these days so people wrote what they heard or thought they heard. Sources: Johannes Autsema, born 1911, Genlias and DTB Uithuizen.

Married on April 28 1799 to

DIJKEMA, Geertje Willems.

This family is followed in this genealogy.

12 Jantjen, born May 10 1778 in Uithuizen (Source: DTB Uithuizen)

From this generations Lastnames were obliged, because of a French law. Napoleon occupied a large part of Europe and people were forced to use a lastname. Especially because of the military service it was regarded of the utmost importance that people would do that. The French also introduced the Civil Registry in the Netherlands. In our family the children Cornelis/Kornellis Jannes (2) and Piets Jans (or Jannes/Jannens) (11) started using the lastname AUSEMA. Jan Jannes (11) however started using the lastname AUTSEMA, although this name was written in different varieties like OUSEMA and OUDSEMA. I do not think this was the intention, but it was more due to the fact that there were no uniform spelling-rules and people wrote down what they heard. I came across situations in which the father came to report the birth of a son, the registrar wrote the lastname as OUDSEMA, he wrote the father's name as AUSEMA and the father signed the birth certificate with AUTSEMA. In this overview I wil follow Jan Jannes OUDSEMA, who started using the lastname AUTSEMA. Members of the other part of our family who used the name AUSEMA will published when I am done doing some more research.

There were two twins born in this part of the family: Jan en Derk Jan (actually three children) and Johannes en Ida. The parents of these children died early, and for this reason the family was split up in two parts. The eldest children (Jan, Derk Jan) moved in with an unknown family. According to C.M. Autsema (born 1928) Derk Jan lived with a widow Appingedam and after that in several guest houses. According to Johannes AUTSEMA (born 7 January 1911, Appingedam) , with whom I have spoken and received some documents from about our family the study of Jan Autsema (he became a teacher) was paid by the HOEKSEMA-family. The other three children moved in with Freerkje AUTSEMA and Johannes Henderikus Smit, who did not have any children of their own.

Due to privacy-legislation in the Netherland the next members of our family (born in the 20th century and later) are removed from this file. Although I had permission from most of our family-members, I have not registered this in a 100% adequate manner. To avoid possible problems I have decided to remove these family- members from this website. I know that the value of this file changes dramatically but members of our family can allways contact me with questions. If you want to be added to this website I would kindly ask you to send me a mail stating that you want your data (first- and lastname, date and place of birth) to be published on this website.

In this listing you will find the lastnames of families that are possibly related to the "Autsema-family".
